Screen printing ink colors vs shirt colors: why quotes change
In a screen-printing quote, shirt colors and ink colors are separate decisions. Changing the garment color can also affect the print setup, including whether an underbase or different ink is needed. Ask the printer to quote the actual artwork on the actual blanks before comparing totals.

Count the printed locations separately
A front logo and a back design can require different setups. Give the printer the artwork for each location and ask how the colors are counted. A screen preview may include white areas that are either printed ink or simply unprinted fabric.
Custom Ink's printing-method explanation describes the use of separate screens for colors in screen printing. The printer should explain how your particular design is separated and priced.
Use one clear quote brief
| Specify | Example of the detail needed |
|---|---|
| Blank | Brand, style, fabric and color |
| Quantity | Totals by size and garment color |
| Front artwork | Intended ink colors and print size |
| Back or sleeve | Separate artwork and location |
| Color expectation | Exact matching request or acceptable approximation |
Don't assume a full-color photograph is a small number of ink colors because it contains a few dominant shades. Ask whether screen printing or another method is appropriate for the design and quantity.
Ask what happens on dark shirts
A design shown on white fabric may need a different production approach on navy or black. Ask whether an underbase is included, whether it affects cost and whether the finished feel changes.
If the order mixes light and dark shirts, ask whether they can share the same setup. A supplier may recommend separate versions of the artwork. Get those versions approved instead of letting production guess.
Compare the all-in order
Request setup, garments, decoration, delivery and any rush charges as separate entries. Ask how reorders are priced and whether stored artwork or screens change future charges. Don't assume a past unit price applies to a different quantity.
